Akif Mohamood

Akif Mahmood graduated in Fashion Design from the Pakistan Institute of Fashion Design (PIFD) in July 2010 and received the best  collection award for his work at the institute’s graduation show. After his work was reviewed by the Pakistan Fashion Design Council, he was invited, as one of Pakistan’s emerging designers, to showcase his debut collection under his own label, “Akif”, at PFDC Sunsilk Fashion week in Nov 2010.

“The best feeling in the world is knowing that you are good at what you do. The unwavering confidence that knowledge brings is irreplaceable. That is the most profound contribution that the Pakistan Institute of Fashion Design made to my life. I have always wanted to be a fashion Designer. There was never any doubt in my mind as to what I wanted to do with my life hence the PIFD and I were the perfect fit from the start. The four years that I spent at the institute honed my talent and taught me my craft down to the tiniest details. I appreciated the environment; a place where I could pursue my interests with quality training was a dream come true. For once in my life I excelled academically and that was just the boost I needed as a nineteen year old.

The institute also gave me the opportunity to see the world and expand my horizons. I travelled to Japan for the Maku Hari Grand Prix; an international competition. I interacted with students from all over the world from diverse cultural backgrounds. These experiences along with many other wonderful moments are what I look back at when I reminisce about my school. I think of me fellow students, the wonderful faculty and inspiration that were around me every day. As cliché as it may sound, these were among the best days of my life.”

Referred to as the 'New King of Couture" by the Harpars Bazaar Magazine Dubai, The HSY brand by the Hassan Sheheryar Yasin today is more than a label, it's a lifestyle.

Winner of the Designer of the year award at the Lux Style Awards 2005 as well as 2007 in Malaysia, HSY also won the Most Stylish Fashion Icon at the MTV Style Awards in 2008. The label has won Style Guru of the year by the Indus Style awards in 2007 and was just named the 20 Top Fashion Icons of the World 2009 by international I.Q Magazine with the likes of David Beckhan, Jonny Depp, Barack Obama, Prince Charles, David Bowie, Tom Ford and George Clooney. He was the only Pakistani ever to be on the list.

Hassan Shehryar Yasin is a salutatorian graduate of the PIFD (class of 2000). This is where his journey began to become the leading name to represent Pakistan in the world of Fashion.

“The four years that I spent studying fashion are ones that I will always remember very fondly. It’s here that I learned so much about what it takes to make it in the industry and the friends I have made while at the School are the ones I hope to keep for life,” says Hassan. “Every day is a challenge while studying and the school pushed you harder at every step to ensure you did your best. There is no other institute like this in the country and I value my time and experience here greatly.”

PIFD graduates have an impressive 100% employment rate in the country as well as recruitment abroad as Creative Directors, Designers, Pattern Makers, Merchandisers and Textile Designers.
