PIFD Inauguration Ceremony:

The Pakistan Institute of Fashion and Design hosted its inauguration ceremony at its new facility in Johar Town Lahore, on 28th February 2011.

The Vice Chancellor Ms. Hina Tayyaba delivered the welcome note, in which she talked about the history of the Institute, the reason for its creation, expansion of the academic portfolio, acquiring the Charter for degree awarding status, financial aid, Board of Trustees, Endowment Fund and future.

The Secretary Commerce, Mr. Zafar Mahmood addressed the audience and briefly discussed the new initiative to establish 6 affiliated colleges in 6 cities of Pakistan in 2011.

The honourable Chief Guest Makhdoom Amin Fahim, Minister for Commerce also addressed the audience and announced two scholarships for PIFD students.

Souvenirs and token of appreciation were presented to some of the distinguished guests to honour and commemorate their contributions towards making PIFD a success.

Bright Young Things

Pakistan School of Fashion Design (PSFD) graduates Akif Mehmood and Mohsin Ali have been setting the ramp and media ablaze with their creativity and rave reviews in major publications and marked as one’s to watch out for in the future.

Akif received the Best Collection Award and Mohsin received the Bronze award at the PIFD graduate show 2010.

Akif Mehmood, Mohsin Ali and Ali Xeeshan (a previous PSFD graduate), were hand-picked by Pakistan Fashion Design Council Chairperson Mrs. Sehyr Saigol to showcase their individual collections at the PFDC Sunsilk Fashion Week in November at Karachi. This was the second Fashion Week for Ali Xeeshan, who had participated in the event earlier in February as well.

Sawatdee Kaa Bangkok!

The Gems and Jewellery department is part of the School of Accessories and Products, which was launched in 2008. The first batch flew over to Bangkok, Thailand in 2010 to attend a short-course and also the 46th International Gems and Jewellery Fair.

The top 15 students from a batch of 26 were selected to go for the week-long visit accompanied by 2 faculty members: Mr. Muhammad Aslam and Mr. Muhammad Umar, in September.

The students attended a short course called ’Introduction to Basic Gemology’, in collaboration with the Asian Institute of Gemological Sciences (AIGS).

The students attended the 46th International Gems and Jewellery Fair, Bangkok to attend a Fair of International calibre was a great bonus for the students and staff. There is no better learning than experiencing the event itself!

Bon Jour Mod’ Spe!

Students from Marketing and Merchandising along with Mr. Hammad Khawaja and Mr. Tallal Khan visited our affiliate Mod’ Spe in Paris and also attended the mega prêt a porter.

They were welcomed by the Director Mod’ Spe Mr. Rene Mardallet, and attended classroom sessions with Mr. Bruno Benedic and Ms. Francoise Bathie.

At the prêt a porter, the students not only attended a fashion show, but they also got the opportunity to study upcoming fashion trends:  silhouettes, colours and fabrics; new industry developments for eco-friendly fabrics, dyes and recycling and also experienced the process of fashion forecasting.

God Dag Boras!

Every year, the top 10 (or more) students from Marketing and Merchandising department attend a semester at The Swedish School of Textiles in Boras, Sweden.

This study option is offered in the Autumn Semester and students can choose from a variety of courses and different credit hours. The courses offered range from Knitting to Fashion Logistics, Brand Development and Design Project.

Students are not charged tuition fee and are taught in English. At the moment there are 7 students from the batch of 2008, who are in Boras since August 2010 for a period of 5 months to complete Fashion Marketing and Merchandising Semester 5.

We are collaborating with many local industries and companies to provide our students with opportunities for industry exposure, interaction and field experience through the course of their study.

CrossRoads

Our 3^rd year Textile students are developing their own products at Forest Sweaters factory, which is the manufacturing facility for CrossRoads (brand and retail outlet).

PCSIR

The Textile and Gems & Jewellery students also visit the Pakistan Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (PCSIR) to experiment and gain hands-on experience at the labs for dyeing and textile testing, jewellery casting etc.

PLGMEA

PIFD Leather Accessories and Footwear faculty members Mr. Naveed Anwar and Mr. Shahzad Khan met with the Executive Committee of Pakistan Leather Garments Manufacturers and Exporters Association (PLGMEA).

This was a great opportunity for the Association and our faculty to interact, exchange views and discuss ways of improvement. PLGMEA has also extended a student exchange programme and will also be accepting interns from PIFD in factories.

Seminar for Leather Accessories and Footwear Curriculum Development

In July 2010, distinguished members from PLGMEA, Pakistan Glove Manufacturers and Exporters Association and businessmen from the footwear, leather garment and products industry convened at PIFD to review the scheme of studies for the Leather Accessories and Footwear programme.

This session was crucial in sharing our curriculum and provided a platform for direct feedback and what all can be done for improvement and making it relevant to the needs and demands of the local industry.

Batch of 2010: Grand Finale

July 2010: The graduating batch of Fashion Design put up a spectacular fashion show at the PIFD auditorium. The French Ambassador to Pakistan, His Excellency Mr.Daniel Jouanneau was the chief guest at the event, where  32 students showcased their collections.

The collections were inspired by exploring the rich diversity of cultures, within and beyond the borders of our country.

The audience was an eclectic mix of government officials, foreign dignitaries, academia, artists, creative designers, manufacturers and distributors.

PFDC Sunsilk Fashion Week 2010

The 2010 graduating batch showcased their final work at the PFDC Fashion Week in November. The collection was very well-received by the audience and lauded for the fresh creativity being injected into the industry. We are very proud of all our students and wish them best of luck in their future endeavours.

Furniture Expo

Students from our Furniture department took part in the Furniture Expo held in Islamabad in November 2010.

The event was inaugurated by the Prime Minister and organised by Furniture Pakistan to bring together and showcase talent from all over the country.

Our student’s work was very well-received and it was very encouraging for them to be part of an exhibition, where they displayed their work alongside professionals such as Wood Co., Ahad Interiors, InDesign and National Furniture.

Karachi Visit

The 3^rd year Textile students attended the Indus Valley final year thesis display in Karachi. The visit was also availed for field visits to local industries such as Al Karam, Gul Ahmed and Khaadi. Here, the students saw the design houses, and new collection in a different product range. The group also went to Makli Thatta to see how culture influences ornaments.

Chairman Pakistan Footwear Manufacturers Association Visits PIFD

Mr. Farrukh Saleem, Chairman Pakistan Footwear Manufactures Association, visited us in October to interact with the students and faculty, review work in progress and to share guidelines and tips relevant to the Leather Accessories and Footwear Department.

An initiative has been taken to establish 6 affiliated colleges, in 6 cities of the country, in 2011. This project is being rolled-out with collaboration from the Trade Development Authority of Pakistan.

1.    The Islamabad College offers Fashion Design, and Gems & Jewellery studies

4.    The Multan College offers Textile Design and Ceramics

The disciplines offered have been carefully selected and matched to each city’s potential in natural resources, labour, and its indigenous industry in order to capitalise on the strengths of the local economy.

24 members of the staff have been recruited and are being trained for 6 months at PIFD by Mr. Gernot Lenschow before being assigned to respective cities.
